Which Styles of Yoga Use Different Yoga Mats and Which Length Is Used
Yoga mats are used in virtually every modern style of yoga that involves physical poses. Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Power Yoga, Iyengar, Yin, Restorative, and Hot Yoga can all be practiced on yoga mats. The characteristics that matter most can vary according to the practice. More active styles may place greater importance on grip and stability, while slower or restorative practices may place greater emphasis on cushioning and comfort. A mat's material and thickness can therefore be selected according to the demands of the practice rather than the name of the yoga style alone.
Mat length is generally selected according to the practitioner's height rather than being assigned to a particular yoga style. A 68-inch mat is a common standard size, while 72-inch mats provide additional room for taller practitioners. Extra-long mats measuring approximately 80–84 inches can provide more space for taller people or practitioners who want additional room during full-body poses and reclining positions. Travel mats are commonly available in standard lengths but are made thinner and lighter for transportation.
