What Is a Yoga Block

A yoga block is a firm yoga prop used to provide support, stability, and additional height during yoga poses. Most traditional yoga blocks are rectangular and can be made from foam, cork, wood, or other firm materials. A block can essentially bring the floor closer to the practitioner, making it easier to maintain proper positioning when the hands cannot comfortably reach the floor. Yoga blocks can also be placed beneath other parts of the body to provide support or elevation during seated, standing, balancing, and reclining poses.

A yoga block is not simply a tool for beginners or people who are less flexible. Practitioners at all levels can use blocks to modify a pose, improve stability, maintain alignment, or explore a posture with additional support. Depending on how the block is positioned, it can provide three different heights, making it possible to adjust the amount of support for a particular pose or individual body. Using one or two blocks can also help create a more stable foundation during poses where balance, reach, or positioning is challenging.
