The Different Sizes and Shapes

The Different Sizes and Shapes of Yoga Bolsters
Yoga bolsters come in several shapes and sizes, with each design providing a different type of support. The most common shapes are rectangular, round, and pranayama bolsters. Rectangular bolsters have a broad, flat surface that provides a stable base for the back, torso, hips, or legs and are commonly used when a practitioner needs steady support. Round bolsters have a cylindrical shape that follows the natural curves of the body and can be particularly useful for supporting the spine, opening the chest, or placing beneath the knees. Pranayama bolsters are longer and narrower than standard bolsters and are designed to provide more targeted support, particularly along the length of the spine during breathing exercises.

Bolster sizes can also vary considerably, including full-size and smaller versions designed for more targeted support or easier transportation. A typical full-size rectangular bolster may be approximately 24–26 inches long, while round bolsters are often around 24–28 inches long and approximately 9–10 inches in diameter. Pranayama bolsters are generally narrower, often around 25 inches long and only a few inches high or wide. Smaller rectangular or round bolsters can be useful when a practitioner needs support in a more specific area or prefers a lighter, more compact prop. The appropriate size depends on the practitioner's body, the pose being practiced, and the amount and type of support desired.
