The Different Sizes and Shapes of Yoga Mats

Most yoga mats are rectangular, but they are available in a variety of lengths, widths, and thicknesses. A traditional standard size is approximately 68 inches long by 24 inches wide, while 72-inch mats have become common for practitioners who want additional length. Extra-long mats can measure approximately 80 to 84 inches, while extra-wide mats may measure 28, 30, or even 36 inches wide. Travel mats are generally thinner and designed to be lighter and easier to transport.

Thickness is another important difference between yoga mats. Travel mats may be around 1.5–2 mm thick, standard mats commonly fall around 3–4 mm, and thicker mats may be approximately 5–6 mm or more. Thinner mats are lighter and can provide a firmer feel against the floor, while thicker mats provide additional cushioning. Although rectangular mats are by far the most common, specialty mats can also be wider or longer to provide additional practice space.
