The Different Sizes and Shapes of Yoga Blocks
The traditional yoga block is a rectangular, brick-shaped block. A commonly available size is approximately 9 × 6 × 4 inches, although 3-inch-thick versions and other dimensions are also widely available. B.K.S. Iyengar's often-cited ideal brick size was approximately 9 × 4.5 × 3 inches. The dimensions of a block determine the amount of height it provides and how comfortable it may be for different hand sizes and body proportions. Because a rectangular block has three usable sides, simply turning the block changes the height available to the practitioner.
In addition to traditional rectangular blocks, other shapes are available for specialized uses. Rounded, curved, and egg-shaped blocks can provide a different type of support and may be more comfortable when placed beneath the spine or used in reclining poses. Wedge-shaped blocks and half-round or quarter-round props are also available and can be used for specific positioning needs. Materials vary as well, with foam, cork, wood, and bamboo among the options found in modern yoga equipment.
