The Different Sizes and Shapes of Meditation Cushions
Meditation cushions are available in several different shapes and sizes. The round zafu is one of the most traditional designs and is generally used to elevate the hips during cross-legged meditation. Crescent or half-moon cushions have a curved front that provides additional space for the legs and can offer a different type of hip and thigh support. Rectangular meditation cushions, sometimes called Zen pillows or meditation pillows, provide a broader, flatter seating surface and can be useful for people who prefer a lower or more extended seat.
Height is particularly important when selecting a meditation cushion. Common round zafus are often approximately 14–16 inches in diameter, with the height varying according to the amount and type of filling. Taller cushions can provide additional elevation for practitioners who need more space between their hips and knees, while lower cushions may be suitable for people who are more flexible or prefer a lower sitting position. A flat zabuton is considerably larger than a zafu and is designed to sit underneath the meditation cushion as a protective and supportive floor mat.
