How to Use a Yoga Mat

Using a yoga mat is generally straightforward. Place the mat on a clean, flat surface with enough room around it to move safely. During practice, the hands and feet are positioned directly on the mat in poses such as Downward-Facing Dog, Warrior poses, Plank, seated poses, and other movements. The mat provides a consistent surface that can help with traction and stability as the practitioner moves between poses.

The mat can be used for both active and stationary portions of a yoga practice. During standing and flowing sequences, the grip of the mat helps keep the hands and feet in position. During seated or reclining poses, the mat provides a layer of cushioning between the body and the floor. Depending on the practice, additional props such as blocks, straps, blankets, or bolsters can be placed on top of the mat to provide additional support.
