How to Use a Yoga Block

There are many ways to use a yoga block during a yoga practice. In standing poses such as Triangle Pose, a block can be placed beside the foot to bring the floor closer to the hand, allowing the practitioner to maintain a longer spine and more comfortable alignment. Blocks can also be placed beneath the hands during forward folds, beneath the hips during seated poses, or under the body for additional support in certain balancing and reclining positions. The block can be turned onto its lowest, middle, or highest side depending on the amount of elevation needed.

Yoga blocks can also be used in restorative and supported poses where the goal is to provide a stable surface rather than increase flexibility. Two blocks can sometimes be used together, either side by side or at different heights, to create additional support. A block should provide a stable foundation and allow the practitioner to maintain comfortable positioning without forcing the body into a deeper pose. The appropriate height depends on the pose, body proportions, flexibility, and the type of support required.
